Maersk Offshore Wind has named its new wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), Maersk Viridis, during a ceremony held on board the vessel. The vessel was officially christened by its godmother, Charlotte Nørkjær Larsen, during an event on the main deck in which a bottle of champagne was broken against the crane pedestal.
Maersk Viridis has a capacity of about 40,000 tonnes and is designed to install offshore wind turbines. The vessel was built by Seatrium. The name “Viridis” is derived from Latin and means “green”, reflecting the vessel’s intended role in supporting offshore wind deployment. Following the ceremony, the vessel is expected to sail to the USA where it will support offshore wind installation activities.
