Hundreds of local businesses attended a Meet the Buyer event in Cumnock to explore opportunities linked to East Ayrshire's onshore wind development pipeline. The event, held at Cumnock Town Hall, brought together businesses ranging from hospitality providers and construction firms to professional services companies and developers behind the area's 1.5 GW onshore wind pipeline. Attendees could learn about upcoming contracts, meet potential customers and find out how to tender for work.
The programme included separate sessions for businesses experienced in contract tendering and those seeking to enter the renewable energy supply chain. Developers represented included Brockwell, Vattenfall, ScottishPower Renewables, Fred. Olsen Renewables, Force 9 Energy Partners, Renewco and 3REnergy, alongside SP Energy Networks.
Opportunities extend beyond specialist wind energy contractors to include plant hire, transport, accommodation, catering and professional services. Businesses could also identify skills and experience gaps that might affect their ability to secure contracts, with support organisations available to provide guidance.
Organisers will use feedback from attendees to identify further procurement support and training needs. They also plan to apply the approach in other areas, including South Lanarkshire, to help local businesses prepare for future renewable energy contracts.
Independent analysis by BIGGAR Economics estimates that the projects could represent around £2 billion in local economic investment over the next five to eight years, with an expected lifetime investment of £4 billion.
