The small wind section of the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), WWEA Small Wind, convened last week to assess the global state of the sector and identify key challenges. Despite offering a technically and economically viable solution for decentralised electricity supply, particularly in the category of turbines up to 100 kW, the small wind sector continues to face significant obstacles in many regions.
While farmers and small businesses are often the primary users, widespread deployment is hindered by low awareness, insufficient policy support, and complex permitting procedures.
In response, WWEA Small Wind has committed to the following priorities:
- raising awareness of small wind’s potential
- advocating for improved regulatory frameworks
- strengthening international collaboration and visibility
The section confirmed Frits Ogg, Dutch wind power pioneer and journalist, and Mike Bergey, a longstanding US small wind entrepreneur, as co-chairs.
To support its aims, WWEA Small Wind continues to host regular webinars and podcasts that explore market trends, regulatory developments, and practical applications in the small wind sector. Recent editions can be viewed at WWEA's YouTube channel:
