WEG, Petrobras and Statkraft have commissioned the largest onshore wind turbine in the Americas. The 7 MW unit was installed at the Seabra Wind Farm, part of the Brotas de Macaúbas Complex in Bahia, Brazil. At full capacity, it can generate around 2,500 MWh per month, equivalent to the annual consumption of about 15,000 Brazilian households.
Petrobras invested BRL 130 million, originating from the Research and Development clause with ANP, and partnered with WEG to develop the turbine. The project also received financing from BNDES and support from the Federal Government through the Ministry of the Environment.
The 2023 agreement between Petrobras and WEG covered the development of turbine technologies suited to Brazilian wind conditions, as well as the construction and testing of a prototype. Statkraft purchased the turbine as part of a modernisation programme at the Seabra Wind Farm. The turbine reaches a total height of 220 metres from the ground to the blade tip.
