Ignitis Group and Ignitis Renewables have proposed adjusting the implementation schedule for the Curonian Nord offshore wind project in Lithuania, with development to resume when market, financing or technological conditions improve.
The companies have submitted assessments of alternative implementation options to the Ministries of Energy and Finance, following recommendations from the National Audit Office. They consider postponing the project while preserving the value of work completed so far to be the most suitable option under current market conditions and the state’s financial priorities.
The proposal follows an audit recommendation to make a data-based decision on the project’s future by the end of 2026. Ignitis Group has asked the ministries to assess the options in a coordinated manner, taking into account the project’s development and permitting schedules, financing commitments and the requirements for offshore wind infrastructure.
The companies have also identified the need to align the permitting process with the time required to develop an offshore wind farm, link financial commitments to the start of construction, accelerate procedures for onshore infrastructure and establish design and work organisation rules suited to offshore wind projects.
In its February 2025 annual report, Ignitis Group identified difficulties in securing long-term power purchase agreements as a result of delays in large-scale electrolysis projects across Europe. Supply chain challenges affecting offshore wind turbine components could also complicate financing and delay the start of commercial operations.
Ignitis Renewables continues preparatory work and investments needed to obtain a construction permit in 2027. The proposed schedule adjustment would allow the project to be resumed if market and financing conditions change.
