The UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband MP, has granted a Development Consent Order (DCO) for the Rampion 2 Offshore Wind Farm, which is being developed off the coast of Sussex. The project, an extension of the existing Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, is being led by RWE on behalf of its joint venture partners.
Rampion 2 will consist of up to 90 wind turbines and foundations located offshore. Subsea cables will transmit the electricity to shore at Climping Beach, with an underground cable route delivering power to a new substation at Oakendene near Cowfold. From there, it will connect to the national transmission network at Bolney in Mid Sussex.
The project is eligible for entry into a future Contract for Difference (CfD) auction. A key next step is the Financial Investment Decision (FID) by the joint venture partners, after which construction can begin. Rampion 2 is expected to become operational by the end of the decade.
The project is a joint venture between RWE (50.1%), a Macquarie-led consortium (25%), and Enbridge (24.9%).
