Ming Yang Smart Energy Group is assessing plans to build a wind turbine factory in Spain after the United Kingdom blocked its proposed facility in Scotland on national security grounds, according to reporting by Bloomberg News.
The company is evaluating potential sites and may produce offshore wind turbine blades and nacelles at the facility. Manufacturing within Europe is considered important for securing regional orders, according to Horatio Evers, chief executive of Ming Yang Europe. Entry by Ming Yang could increase competition, although it may also challenge an industry largely served by European suppliers.
Spain has signalled openness to potential investment following a meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Ming Yang chairman Zhang Chuanwei in Beijing. However, Spain currently has limited offshore wind deployment, with a stronger focus on onshore projects.
To secure demand, Ming Yang is likely to target other European markets such as Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. However, market access remains uncertain, and a German developer previously dropped plans to use Ming Yang turbines in favour of Siemens Gamesa technology.
