Nexans has inaugurated a 53-metre-high high-voltage tower at its Charleroi facility in Belgium as part of an investment programme to expand its European manufacturing capacity for high-voltage cables. The new facility will support the production of high-voltage land cables, including 525 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems with copper conductors of up to 3,000 mm². It will also prepare the facility for future high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable systems with aluminium conductors of up to 3,500 mm².
The cable systems are intended for the transmission of electricity over long distances and for connecting renewable energy projects to transmission networks. The tower is part of the €90 million investment programme announced by Nexans in 2024. The programme includes upgrades to manufacturing and testing facilities and increased production capacity for high-voltage cable technologies. The investment is intended to support offshore wind projects and grid interconnection projects in Europe.
