China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has brought its 2 GW Yangjiang Fanshi offshore wind project in Guangdong, China, into full operation. The project is the first in China to deploy 18 MW offshore wind turbines at scale.
Located off the coast of Yangjiang, the project comprises the Fanshi I and Fanshi II projects. The site extends up to 81 km offshore and has a maximum water depth of 53 metres. A total of 131 turbines have been installed, including 33 18 MW turbines. The 18 MW turbines have a rotor diameter of 292 metres and a swept area of approximately 66,000 square metres. Each turbine is expected to generate up to 56 million kWh of electricity annually.
The project also includes China's first 500 kV intermediate reactive power compensation station at an offshore wind farm. The facility is intended to support stable transmission from the site over the long distance to shore. At full operation, the project is expected to supply more than 6.6 billion kWh of electricity annually.
