Hawaiian Electric has issued its Integrated Grid Planning Request for Proposals (IGP RFP), seeking competitively priced renewable energy and energy storage projects for Oahu, Hawaii Island and Maui.
The procurement will seek nearly 1,650 GWh of variable renewable energy, including wind and solar, together with 465 MW of grid-forming resources, such as solar generation combined with battery storage, and 111 MW of firm generating capacity. The selected projects are expected to enter service between 2031 and 2034.
The utility plans to accelerate the retirement of ageing power plants by adding new firm generation capable of supplying electricity around the clock when wind and solar generation is unavailable.
Hawaiian Electric is also seeking separate regulatory approval to expand the procurement of fuel-flexible firm generation on Oahu by up to an additional 500 MW. The company has asked the Public Utilities Commission to evaluate this element through a separate regulatory process without predetermining its size or fuel type.
In addition, Hawaiian Electric plans to launch a separate request for proposals for fuel supply by the end of 2026. The process will cover both liquid and gaseous fuels and assess factors including cost, sourcing and environmental impact.
