ABB has secured a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) to supply an integrated power and propulsion system for Allseas’ semi-submersible heavy transport vessel Grand Tour. The 230-metre vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028 and will transport large converter stations from manufacturers in Asia and Europe before transferring them to Allseas’ construction vessel Pioneering Spirit for installation.
Grand Tour will be able to carry loads of up to 40,000 tonnes on its stern deck. It will position itself alongside Pioneering Spirit and submerge its main deck below the waterline, allowing converter stations to be floated directly onto the vessel.
ABB will supply four 3.5 MW Azipod propulsion units with nozzles, providing thrust for the vessel’s manoeuvring and dynamic positioning requirements. The 360-degree rotating propulsion units will support positioning alongside Pioneering Spirit, while the nozzles are designed to improve efficiency during transit.
The package also includes a medium-voltage alternating current power plant in a closed-ring configuration, controlled by ABB’s power and energy management system and supported by a power plant protection system. Remote condition monitoring and maintenance capabilities are also included.
