TotalEnergies has taken the final investment decision and secured financing for the Mirny onshore wind and battery energy storage system project in Kazakhstan. The project, located in the southeast of the country, will combine a 1 GW onshore wind farm with a 600 MWh battery storage system supplied by Saft.
It is expected to generate around 100 TWh of renewable electricity over 25 years, sufficient to supply approximately 1 million people in Kazakhstan. Electricity will be sold to the Government of Kazakhstan under a 25-year power purchase agreement signed in 2023.
TotalEnergies holds a 60% stake in the project, alongside Samruk Energy and KazMunayGas, each with 20%. Total investment amounts to around US$1.2 billion, with approximately 75% financed through external funding.
Financing has been secured through a common terms agreement with an international lending consortium including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Proparco, Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft, Société Générale, Qatar National Bank Group, China Construction Bank and Standard Chartered.
