The Spanish wind sector has launched a dedicated artificial intelligence laboratory aimed at accelerating the practical application of AI across renewable energy operations and value chains. The initiative is a joint effort between the Spanish Wind Energy Association and the Institute of Knowledge Engineering, bringing together wind energy companies, artificial intelligence specialists and technology providers.

The laboratory is designed to identify and assess high-impact applications of AI in wind energy, including operations and maintenance, wind resource assessment, forecasting, asset management, electricity markets and regulatory processes. It will also examine organisational and operational requirements linked to AI deployment, as well as technology maturity and system integration challenges.

A key objective is to map existing and emerging AI use cases across the sector. This sector-wide analysis is planned for publication in 2027 and is expected to highlight opportunities in areas such as production forecasting, weather modelling, lifecycle optimisation and market operations.

The initiative also reflects wider industry interest in improving efficiency and competitiveness through digitalisation. Focus areas include improved data use, predictive maintenance, faster decision-making, cost reduction and improved system reliability. Challenges identified include data quality, integration with existing systems, governance frameworks and regulatory compliance.
